Why We Use Argan Oil in Our Lotion

We put argan oil in First Light lotion because it does what simple, quality ingredients should do: it sinks in, it softens skin, and it does not leave a greasy film behind. When you are making something for people to use every day, those things matter.

Argan oil comes from the kernels of argan trees that grow in Morocco. People have pressed it by hand for hundreds of years. We use the cold-pressed kind, which means no heat or chemicals were used to extract it. That keeps the fatty acids and vitamin E intact.

What argan oil does for skin

Argan oil is high in oleic and linoleic acids. Both are fatty acids that occur naturally in healthy skin. When skin is dry or damaged, it often lacks those acids. Applying them helps restore the barrier that keeps moisture in and irritants out.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. People with sensitive or reactive skin often choose products with vitamin E because it is known to support skin repair. We do not claim that our lotion treats any condition, but we do know that argan oil has been used traditionally for dry, rough, or stressed skin.

The oil absorbs quickly. That matters when you are getting dressed for work or putting lotion on before bed. Nobody wants to wait around feeling slick.

Why we pair it with goat milk

Our Nigerian Dwarf goats give us the milk that makes up the base of First Light. Goat milk contains lactic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid that helps remove dead skin cells. It also has fat molecules that are smaller than those in cow milk, so they absorb more easily.

When we combine raw goat milk with cold-pressed argan oil, we get a lotion that is both hydrating and light. The milk provides immediate softness. The argan oil reinforces the skin barrier and keeps that softness from disappearing an hour later.

We make First Light in small batches here on our farm in Great Falls. We milk the goats, measure the oil, mix it by hand, and pour it into jars. That is the whole process.

How argan oil compares to other oils

We tried other oils before we settled on argan. Coconut oil is inexpensive and shelf-stable, but it sits on top of skin for too long and can clog pores on some people. Olive oil is traditional and works well in soap, but it feels heavy in lotion.

Jojoba oil is close. It absorbs well and rarely causes reactions. We still prefer argan because it has a higher vitamin E content and a slightly richer feel without being greasy. For a lotion meant to work on hands, elbows, and faces alike, argan does the job.

Some people worry about the cost of argan oil or whether it is sourced responsibly. We buy ours from a supplier who works directly with women's cooperatives in Morocco. The oil is certified organic. We pay more for it than we would for a commodity oil, but we would rather use something we trust.

What First Light feels like

The lotion goes on smooth and sinks in within a minute or two. It does not leave a film. It does not have a strong smell, just a faint, clean scent from the milk and oil themselves. If you are used to lotions that smell like a candle store or feel like you rubbed shortening on your hands, this will be different.

People who work outside or wash their hands frequently tell us they keep a jar by the sink. People with eczema or psoriasis tell us it does not sting or flare their skin. We do not make medical claims, but we listen when customers talk about what works for them.

Why we keep it simple

First Light has raw Nigerian Dwarf goat milk and cold-pressed argan oil. That is the formula. We do not add fragrance, dye, or filler ingredients with names you need a chemistry degree to pronounce.

Keeping it simple means we know exactly what is in the jar. It also means people with allergies or sensitivities have less to worry about. If your skin reacts to something, you know what it was.

We are not trying to compete with the lotions you see in drugstores or department stores. We are making something for people who want to know where it came from and what went into it. Argan oil is part of that. It works, it is clean, and it fits the way we do things here.

Questions people ask

Does argan oil clog pores?

Argan oil is considered non-comedogenic, which means it does not typically clog pores. People with oily or acne-prone skin often use it without trouble. If you are concerned, try a small amount on your inner arm first.

Can I use First Light on my face?

Yes. We use it on our faces, our hands, and anywhere else that gets dry. The formula is gentle enough for facial skin and effective enough for rough spots like elbows and heels.

How long does a jar last?

That depends on how much you use and how often. Most people tell us a jar lasts a month or two with daily use. A little goes a long way because the lotion spreads easily and absorbs fast.
